One of the oldest traditions as a craft baker is donating the Harvest Loaf. Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the harvest season on 1st August and was called Lammas, meaning ‘Loaf Mass’. Farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a special mass thanking God for the harvest. Although the tradition may have passed on to the baker, it’s an honoured tradition we still uphold to this day and our Harvest Loaf plaits can be found centre stage at festivals across the county.
As well as the tradition of the Harvest Loaf, every year we donate thousands of pounds worth of vouchers to local charities, community groups, schools and sports clubs to be used as prizes in raffles or to purchase from the bakery for fund raising events.
We’ve worked closely with a number of local charities including Chemo Gift Bags, Brookfields Specialist SEN School, Launchpad Reading and No5 Young People and nationally participating in fund raising for Make a Wish and MacMillan.
Our biggest event of the year is National Doughnut Week, a week dedicated to raising funds through the sale of doughnuts for The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury and to date we have raised in excess of £20,000.00.
New for 2020, we have been supporting our local communities further in partnership with Reading Lions, by asking our customers to Round Up For Reading every time they shop with us. Just a few pennies soon make a big difference and supports those in need in our area.
